Vacancy: Maori Liaison Officer - Freshwater Projects

Maori Liaison Officer – Freshwater Projects (5 years fixed term, 20 hours per week)

This is a newly created role that will contribute to the successful implementation of two freshwater environmental projects being carried out in the Tasman Region over the next five years. The primary focus will be to facilitate partnerships with Mana Whenua and to promote collaborative engagement with iwi to produce positive outcomes for both iwi and Council in the delivery of these projects.

Based in the Richmond office and reporting to the Senior Resource Scientist - Freshwater Ecology, you will be the key point of liaison for any interested iwi entity connected to the Tasman District. On a day-to-day basis, you'll work closely with project managers, iwi resource management officers, kaumātua, and iwi leaders, developing and assisting with managing iwi-led programmes funded by the Freshwater Improvement Fund (FIF). These programmes aim to develop the kaitiakitanga (in particular with tamāriki and rangatahi) and Mātauranga Māori of Mana Whenua. You will assist with running wānanga and other events and have responsibility for preparation of reports with a Mātauranga Māori component.

An important aspect of the role is to observe onsite activities and ensure that iwi remains fully informed on the status of work in the wider programme where potential impacts to areas of cultural or natural significance are discovered and ensuing that Māori customs and practices are adhered to. You will also act as a guide to iwi visitors on restoration sites as required. On-site observations will be followed up by accurate record-keeping and attendance at iwi meetings, hui, and wānanga which will provide the opportunity to debrief on the status of each project.

You'll be someone who displays excellent relationship management and communication skills in Te Ao Māori and with key stakeholders including Council's Kaihautū and other staff. This position will appeal to someone with highly established cultural competency, familiarity with Te Reo Māori and Tikanga, and a skill set that will ensure cultural perspectives are reflected in all business practices.
