Freshwater Ranger, Operations, Renwick, Band B

We are seeking a self-motivated and active ranger to join our passionate Renwick biodiversity team on fixed term opportunity for 3 months.

He angitūtanga: About the Role

As a Ranger, you will provide field support to help deliver our freshwater programme, which focuses on migratory fish (particularly Kanakana/lamprey, shortjaw kōkopu, īnanga and tuna/long fin eel) and freshwater biosecurity (pest fish and weeds). The role will be based in the Renwick office but you will work across Picton & South Marlborough Districts with some work in Golden Bay, Motueka and Nelson Lakes as well.

As a key member of the Renwick biodiversity team, your duties will likely include:

  • Fish spotlight surveys, which involves working late at night in remote areas
  • Assisting with deploying & retrieving kanakana/lamprey pheromone samplers
  • Pest fish and weed surveys and monitoring
  • Īnanga spawning surveys
  • Assist with Shortjaw spawning survey in Tinline Stream, Abel Tasman
  • Undertaking fish passage assessments along DOC tracks throughout Picton & Marlborough
  • Some office work on wet weather days
  • Assist the general biodiversity team from time to time

This is a 3 month fixed term opportunity, starting in early December 2022. The position involves a lot of travel throughout the top of the South Island and time spent away from home, up to a week at a time.

We are looking for someone enthusiastic and keen to get stuck into the freshwater work:

  • A passion or interest in freshwater values & protection
  • Excellent physical fitness and proven experience working in remote backcountry areas.
  • Good communication skills, attention to detail and commitment to achieving team objectives.
  • The ability to work well alone or in a small team.
  • The ability to stay away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Basic computer/data entry skills
