We all made it through Alert Level 4 and while some things have eased up a little now we’re in Alert Level 3, a lot of what we have been doing to keep us all safe doesn't change. It's still just as important that we stay physically distant but emotionally close. Whānau workers, iwi, NGOs and community organisations are doing a mammoth amount of work on the frontlines under tremendous pressure to support whānau through these unprecedented times. We are hearing some amazing stories from our SKIP Champions and community partners about how communities are working together to support each other. You are truly heroes and we would like to say a big thank you for everything you are doing for whānau and communities.
It’s all too easy to neglect our own wellbeing in this tricky time, so here are a few tips.
- Take some time out for yourself – try to find even a small window of time between the seemingly endless ‘zui’, whānau and team catch ups to allow yourself to recharge and refocus.
- Reach out – stay connected with loved ones outside your bubble by phone, text or video calling. A five minute kōrero can make a world of difference.
- Keep moving – even something as simple as a walk around the neighbourhood will help clear the mind and help you to reenergise.
- Have a moe – try to avoid late eating and using devices at bedtime, this will give your body a chance to wind down.
- Take care of your own needs – this is so important when it comes to meeting the needs of the whānau and tamariki we work with.
There’s lots more awesome kōrero for whānau and community workers coming up on the SKIP Facebook page. Feel free to share these kōrero on your own channels. Next Wednesday 6 May at 4pm there will be a Facebook Live Q&A focused on supporting Pacific families, be sure to tune in and spread the word. Did you receive this email from a friend or co-worker? Subscribe to the SKIP newsletter to receive our next one.
