Te Arahanga Limited Course 2021
Te Arahanga is accepting enrolments for its 2021 culturally based taiao (environmental) management program. The program will be based in Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South) and will be run through weekend wānanga (5 throughout the year) and online sessions (2 per month). Te Arahanga has spent two years designing a training program to bring out existing taiao mātauranga and enhance it with some of the modern tools of taiao management.
The course will cover:
- Cultural monitoring, including working with the Archaeologist
- Site visits around Tōtaranui (Queen Charlotte Sounds) and Tawhito kōrero
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping
- Cultural Health Indicators (CHI) – freshwater, coastal and ngahere (forest)
- Legislation and policy as it relates to cultural taiao management
- Pest control
- Electric fishing
- Fish translocation
- Taonga species identification
- Rongoā plant identification and uses
