Today’s Budget includes an investment of $200 million to support Māori learners and whānau to connect and succeed in education and strengthen the integration of te reo Māori into all students’ learning.

Support with supplying distance learning packs and teacher connectivity

 Limited funding support is available for some schools with financial and equity or isolation pressures to help with costs associated with supplying teacher connectivity and student learning packs

 

Te reo Māori, kura and Māori medium supports - Ki te Ao Mārama learning packs - tranche one
As you are actively preparing to welcome all returning ākonga on 18 May, we have supports available for kaiako in kura and Māori medium settings. These include:

  • Te reo Māori and Māori medium PLD providers that can support kaiako to continue delivering learning programmes to ākonga in a way that best suit their needs at this time. For further enquiries and to register, email the PLD team at PLD.Enquiries@education.govt.nz
  • Online learning resources for reo Māori learners are continually being uploaded to Ki te Ao Mārama to complement the learning programmes kaiako and whānau already have in place for ākonga.
  • Daily te reo Māori educational programmes on Māori TV through Mauri Reo, Mauri Ora.  Content is fun, interactive and aligned to the curriculum for ākonga in kōhungahunga through to wharekura. Shows are also available OnDemand.

Kōhanga Reo – Budget 2020

We’re pleased to let you know that the Government will invest $196.2 million into kōhanga reo in this year’s Budget. As part of a comprehensive COVID-19 response, the Government is committed to revitalising te reo Māori and giving mokopuna the best start in their early learning. 
This $196.2 million will:

  • Improve kaiako and kaimahi pay rates, and meet other pressing funding needs ($93.4 million over four years)
  • Increase kōhanga reo ECE subsidy funding rates ($65.076 million over four years from July 2020)
  • Increase the Trust’s funding for the kōhanga reo network and people (total $13.760 million over four years)
  • Provide funding for kōhanga reo property assessment, remediation and rehabilitation (total $21.120 million over four years)
  • Assist kōhanga reo to work with the Trust to support kōhanga whanau who have tamariki with learning support needs ($2.8 million to work with the Trust).
